Tips for maximizing your enjoyment of a new addition to your family, your new pooch

If and when you acquire a new pooch, Dr. Slaton, Dr. Rosenstein and Dr. Rothman, from Westlake Village Animal Hospital, all agree that there are a number of responsibilities to be aware of in order to maximize the long term enjoyment of the new addition to your family.

Whether your new pooch is a puppy or an older dog you need to make sure to spay or neuter your dog. Additionally, you need to check and ensure that all the vaccines have been given and updated. You also want to socialized your dog, with other people as well as other dogs. You then, have to think of training your dog. When you need to take a vacation for a week or a day, you may think of boarding your dog or sending him to Day Camp. Of course, there are two adjacent facilities in Westlake Village that are unique in themselves since they can provide all the above services, and some: Westlake Village Animal Hospital and The Barkley Pet Hotel and Day Spa

The Barkley Academy with PAWSitive Power Dog Training is now open for your business.

Introducing Vendy Fris and Nichola Bond at the Barkley Academy:

Vendy is an award-winning dog trainer who has spent over two decades specializing in canine behaviors from police dog training to dog show handling.

Vendy FrisVendy started her career in animal behavior in 1988 while living in Europe. She spent several years training police dogs for the local law enforcement agencies. Now, Vendy focuses her time on training domestic animals for everyday living. She is an experienced dog show handler who has won several awards over the last decade. Vendy also specializes in canine behavior disorders. She can recognize and correct behavior disorders of all types. Vendy is known for her positive training methods. She does not rely on negative enforcement or simple reward based training techniques. You and your dog will notice and appreciate the difference!
Nichola BondNichola was born and raised in Southampton England. Her love for animals began at a very young age. Much to her parent's dismay, she would constantly bring home stray or unwanted dogs to take care of them. Nichola moved to the United States at the age of 18 and adopted her first "American" dog Sam whom she loves dearly. Nichola quickly found a job as a veterinary technician. She is an experienced dog trainer with an immense amount of knowledge for identifying problems and illnesses in dogs. Nichola has been working with the PAWSitive Power Dog Training family for several years and we are very proud to have her at The Barkley Academy. Vendy knows that when Nichola is in charge of the paw students, everyone is happy, healthy and safe.

Residency Stay Programs

The residency stay program, also known as “overnight doggy camp”, enable your dog to learn at his/her full potential. This approach is based on repetition and focus - as each dog is worked continuously throughout each day in order to best achieve the desired results. Students of the camp learn lifetime manners as we prepare them for specific situations that fit your lifestyle. During a Residency Program, your dog will be exposed to many different situations at The Barkley, enabling success when introduced to new settings. Of course, your pet will always receive the excellent 24-hour care and attention The Barkley has come to provide. Consider a Residency program to increase your dog’s rate of learning while making the transition to home stress-free.
All Camps Include:

  • Daily Day Camp or personal play times
  • Daily obedience walk session with multiple private lessons
  • 1 exit bath upon departure
Our residency day program is designed to provide training for dogs that have completed our doggie overnight camp, private lessons or group classes. This is a daily service, which includes playtime with friends, basic training, public work, trips to the beach, hiking and more.

Private Training Lessons
Group obedience classes are great but sometimes you can't fit them into your schedule, or perhaps your dog is not a good candidate for group class. Our private lessons are for puppies and dogs of any age. We will come to your house and evaluate your dog and help you with any problems that you are having and also start teaching basic obedience to develop the language between you and your dog. We will work with you and your family and provide homework and all the training supplies needed. One hour individualized lessons focus is on you, your dog, and the skills and behaviors YOU want your dog to learn – from chewing, digging and barking to resource guarding, anxiety/fear issues, dog-to-dog and dog-to-human aggression.

Group Training lessons
The Barkley offers a variety of group obedience training courses designed to make your dog a more enjoyable member of the family. Our programs are flexible for all breeds and all ages…and yes, you CAN teach an old dog new tricks! Schedule your evaluation and demonstration today!

Newborn Preparation
In this sixty minute appointment, we cover all aspects of preparing your dog for the pending arrival. What to do before baby comes, when baby comes home and after your child's arrival going right through those toddler years! Make this important transition an easy one for both you and your dog.

Puppy Preschool
New pup? What that puppy learns between eight and sixteen weeks of age is going to play a major role in what kind of adult dog you will have. This hands-on six-session course covers all the basics, including socialization tips, feeding, house training, basic obedience, handling, problem prevention and "how to speak dog", as well as what to expect down the road as your puppy matures into adolescence and adulthood. Questions always welcome!

Advanced Obedience Class
Classes designed for dogs that have graduated from one of our other programs, such as puppy-preschool, doggy overnight camp or a private lesson program. Group classes use the knowledge and commands previously learned to help dog and handler work around and through distractions. Each class is focused on the needs of its participants. Pre-registration is required.

Initial Consultation
Clients are encouraged to schedule an initial evaluation with a training counselor in order to determine the best methods for success. Consultations are $25 and are applied toward the balance of any training service.
