Silent victims of our current economy

Aleece blogging for WVAH

Because of the recession many pet owners are surrendering their animals.
They leave them behind because of foreclosures, others leave them behind because they are downsizing and yet others leave them behind because they no longer can afford to  feed their pets. The doctors at Westlake Village Animal Hospital work with many rescue organizations and they have seen more and more pets who need to be placed with good and loving families who can afford them.

A case in point are the two dogs that Dr. Daniel Slaton has adopted: Beanz, a 5lbs black Chihuahua and Porcsha, a French Bulldog.

Beanz was brought to WVAH with an abdomen wound and near death. Dr. Slaton fell in .love with this little silent victim of abuse. He operated on her and tended to her recovery. Beanz is now in good health, living with Dr. Slaton. Beanz is also Noah, his three year old son's pet. Since WVAH move to the new facility at 31166 Via Colinas, Westlake Village, Beanz enjoys The Barkley pet hotel and Spa day camp at the same address.

Another lucky survivor and appreciative day camp member is Porscha, the French Bulldog. Porscha had a chronic stomach problem which was very difficult to remedy. Dr. Slaton agreed to keep her. He was able to solve her stomach problem with a very delicate surgery. Porscha is now enjoying life with Beanz and may other dogs.

Our times call for more and more charitable and rescue organizations and for families that can offer loving homes to our silent victims.

Here are a few non-profit organizations that WVAH works with:

K9 Compassion, with Debbie and Danny Trejo.

S.A.F.E.Another of Dr. Slaton's favorite nonprofit organizations is S.A.F.E.
S.A.F.E. Animal Rescue, a 501(C)3 nonprofit organization, is dedicated to rescuing the sick, injured, overlooked and forgotten dogs due to their medical conditions. S.A.F.E. often rescues "special needs" dogs from shelters.
These dogs are usually overlooked by the public because of their medical conditions. S.A.F.E. has successfully rescued and placed dogs with demodectic mange, eye/limb removal, skin conditions, broken bones, tumors, cherry eye, head trauma, and otherwise considered "unadoptable" dogs.

Malibu Pet Companions (MPC) was founded in 1998 by an Agoura Animal Shelter volunteer who wanted to find a way to fund medical care for homeless shelter animals. MPC was formed as a 501c3 non-profit corporation, and the result has been thousands of animal lives saved over the last 10 years. Many of these animals would never have been given a second chance without MPC funding, and would have likely faced the fate of euthanasia. Fortunately for those homeless pets at the Agoura Animal Shelter, MPC can fund any kind of care needed from minor to major surgeries (including spay/neuter), even special food and prescription medicines.
MPC is a community-based, all volunteer organization. Volunteers foster animals in their homes, transport them to veterinary appointments, and oversee their care while at the shelter. Volunteers receive no compensation for their time and effort other than the gratitude of the homeless pets they care for.
Much of this work would not be possible without the support of two extraordinary groups: those local veterinarians who provide their services at discounted rates, and the members of the public who so generously donate their time and money.
