Onyx, the Survivor against all odds!

Onyx's Facebook page "Justice for Onyx" appealed to every one's sensitivity against animal cruelty. The social networks worked and saved the sweet black Labrador from suffering and certain death.

Last August 2011, Kern County animal control agents, alerted by neighbors, discovered Onyx, a one year old black lab, attached to a pole:  mauled, bleeding and suffering a slow death. The owners, the Castanedas, are believed to have tried to perform their own DIY amputation after a car accident crushed Onyx's hips and hind leg. Wanted to avoid having to pay expensive veterinarian bills, they had part of his hind leg cut off. Onyx had not been treated with any drugs and was not thought to have been given any anesthetics, according to "Justice for Onyx" Facebook page.

Friends of Kern County Animal Shelters Foundation appealed to the world. "Justice for Onyx" went viral! The world responded with an outcry and an outpouring of attention and donations.

Dr. Daniel Slaton, co-owner of Westlake Village Animal Hospital, whose reputation is well known as a rescue veterinarian was contacted by Kern County Rescue group to help Onyx with his medical needs.     Dr. Daniel Slaton saved Onyx from certain death by performing and completing the necessary amputation, holding off his hip surgery if needed, later. With lots of love and attention, Onyx, the survivor, flourished and improved.

Needless to say, the owners were arrested and taken to court. After a number of months, the case finally settled this month, December 2011. The court placed the owners in jail for one year with a fine and three years probation.

Everyone who hears about Onyx and meets Onyx in person falls in love with this wonderful, sweet and loving lab.

Today, Onyx Slaton is a happy lab who has a new loving home, walks very well on three legs, is taking surfing lessons from Larry Brambles, photographer and surf instructor, goes to Day Camp at The Barkley Pet Hotel and Day Spa and sleeps at Dr. Slaton's home with his three other buddies: Porshe, a French Bulldog, Beanz, a black Chihuahua, and Chelsea and King Charles Cavalier.

YOU, the social media, the Rescue groups, Kern County Animal agents and Dr. Slaton from Westlake Village Animal Hospital, saved Onyx and ensured that the abusers received the maximum sentence under the law. Thank you everyone for stepping up! Keep the fight against abuse and animal cruelty!

We, at the Westlake Village Animal Hospital and at The Barkley Pet Hotel and Day Spa, wish you a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year 2012.

Losing your pet, a member of your family.

Our son, Daniel, lost his pet, Rusty, a Saint Bernard to bloat, when he was fifteen. It was one of the most traumatic and emotionally devastating experiences he had been through. He cried for days. This experience triggered a need to become a veterinarian to help  pets get better. Today, Dr. Daniel Slaton is a respected veterinarian and one of two owners of Westlake Village animal Hospital in Westlake Village, California.

In  2001, in his first year, at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Slaton decided to get a puppy. He decided to get a large breed, an English Mastiff and named him Disco. They became inseparable. They were seen everywhere on the island, always together. Disco would sleep on the same bed. Disco was his loyal companion, his family away from home. Disco became his best buddy, his first "baby", his first patient when he was sick. They grew and learned together.

On Sunday October 9, 2011, Dr. Daniel Slaton gently put to rest his beloved sweet giant, Disco. It was the most painful decision he had to make.  Everyone at Westlake Village Animal Hospital was crying. Disco had become a member of the whole Westlake Village Animal Hospital Family.  Grief had begun many months earlier when we all realized that Disco was approaching the end of his life. He went through massage therapy, and many sessions of hydrotherapy. The final decision took place when Disco could not walk anymore. The time had arrived.

Disco has had a wonderful long life. He was a loving family member and friend to all who met him. We all, family, staff and clients, will miss him dearly. He will never be forgotten.

Losing a pet, a family member is not easy.  We are going now through the various stages of grief.  Disco died peacefully at a ripe old age for his breed. The shock, the grief we feel is probably less than if he had died of an unexpected illness at a young age. Dr. Slaton is feeling Disco's absence, his beloved companion, more keenly and painfully since Disco was his only pet for many years and their relationship was special and unique. The length of time grief will last will vary from person to person. Dr. Slaton's grief will last for several weeks. The fact that Dr. Slaton has three more dogs now and that he is staying very busy with his practice will help ease the loss.

I am glad that Dr. Slaton is acknowledging  his emotions. That is a most important step in coping with the loss. We, his family and friends, all are grieving with him and accept his sadness and anger and that it will take time to heal.

One phenomenon that did not exit before is the social media support that he got on his Facebook page after the announcement. The whole "world" found out about Dr. Slaton's loss. His friends, his clients even people he did not know personally showered him with warm and tender messages as well as tasty treats! That surprising and overwhelming support is very helpful for his healing. It allows all of us not to repress our emotions. Yes, time will heal and life will go on but Disco will never be forgotten; Disco will always be in our hearts and as Noah, Dr. Slaton's four year old son says "Disco is in Heaven now!"

Made in the shade!

Summer is approaching. Westlake Village, California will be experiencing hot temperatures. Just be careful with your pets. If you choose to exercise your dogs in the hot Summer heat, make sure they will not get overheated. Watch their  paws on the hot trails and roads. If you are hiking on trails you need to watch out for rattle snakes as well. However, if you encounter a problem Westlake Village Animal Hospital is here to help with all your medical needs for your pets.

You also have a great alternative to the problems with the outdoors for your pets. That is, bring them to The Westlake Barkley Pet Hotel and Day Spa Day Camp where it is both indoors and shaded outdoors. Yes, we have made improvements at the Westlake Barkley. The shades are already installed. Our dogs and their owners love our shades. The misters which will be installed soon, will provide a timed mist to refresh our dogs.

Yes, we are constantly making improvements because we love all our pets at the Westlake Village Animal Hospital and the Westlake Barkley Pet Hotel and Spa.

If you have not read our Newsletter for the month of May please do. We have discovered a new App called Odoggy to view your pets remotely. It is easy to install on your computer and /or your smart cell phone. The Barkley at Westlake is listed as a provider and each suite is on a long list. You just select the suite or the area that your pet is occupying and view your baby.

That is exactly what Stan and Alice Slaton did when they went to Maui, Hawaii last week. We were able to monitor our fifteen year old Bichon in his suite, and Marley our 6 year old Maltese. Marley spent her days at Day Camp and of course loved it.

We are already getting very busy at The Barkley Pet Hotel and Day Spa. So, if you are planning to go on vacation this Summer, make sure you check us out and book your reservations early.

We wish you the best Summer ever, for you, your family and your beloved pets.

Our dogs have it made in the shade!

Yes indeed, our dogs, big and small have it made in the shade at our 32,000 square feet campus made up of Westlake Village Animal Hospital and Westlake Barkley Pet Hotel and Spa.

The Barkley Pet Hotel & Day Spa To Improve Doggie Day Camp

Westlake Village, CA: The Barkley Pet Hotel located in Westlake Village has announced they will improve their doggie day camp during the month of May. "Due to our growth in the day camp, particularly of smaller breed dogs, we found the need to increase the size of the small indoor dog camp. We have increased the size by over 50%", stated Julie Prince, General Manager of The Barkley. "In addition, due to the summer days coming, the owners have decided to shade the entire 8,000 square foot outdoor area and install misters as well. At The Barkley, we are always concerned for the health and safety of our guests and the Conejo Valley can get pretty warm in the summer, therefore we felt that with our pet guests running around playing with their friends, we needed to make sure they were not exposed to too much sun or heat."

"We are delighted to be able to provide all of our guests with the highest level of comfort and safety, whether they are here for the day or for a long term stay." The improvements are all scheduled to be completed by the end of May.
